D9531 'A' End The 'A' end of the loco is the longer of the two noses. This houses the power unit, heat exchanger, radiators and vacuum exhausters and a number of other smaller components. Power Unit : D9531s Davey Paxman 6YJXL power unit (6-cyl 4-stroke, 650BHP @ 1500rpm) had many worn out components, although Paxman still supply all the spares as the 6YJXL is found in marine usage. In late 2003 a refurbished, zero-hours 6YJXL was located in Holland. This was secured for £10k less than the cost of parts required to restore the original and arrived late 2003. Only very minor adjustments were needed to fit the new power unit and due to it's 'Zero-hours' condtion no overhaul is necessary saving 6-12 months work on restoring the original Power unit. D9531's former power unit leaves a decent pool of spares. Once pressure tested, repainted, Heat Exchanger and new Oil Filters fitted the 'new' unit was installed into the loco in August 2008.
